Different Types of Steel Used in Railings

Steel railings are a feature that is renowned for their strength, durability and versatility. Steel is a broad term that a range of steel provides varying properties that makes them apt for certain railing applications. These are some of the common types:

Mild Steel (Carbon Steel)

Mild steel is also commonly known as low carbon steel and is the most widely used steel in railing construction. It is majorly inexpensive, available and readily workable which makes it the apt choice for a wide range of designs. The lower carbon content offers it excellent ductility and weldability, this enables it to create certain shapes and connections. Mild steel can rust or erode if it is left untreated. The steel platform needs more protective coating like galvanizing, powder coating or painting to better it’s longevity especially in the case of outdoor environments.  

Stainless Steel

Stainless steel is a prime option that is widely renowned for its corrosion resistance. It has chromium which curates a passive layer on the surface which prevents rust and staining. This ensures that steel railings are apt for coastal places, swimming pools or places that have high moisture or chemical exposure. 

It gives an aesthetically pleasing look too, the common grades used in railings include 304 and 316. Grade 316 which contains molybdenum offers corrosion resistance in comparison to 304. This makes the steel platform apt for harsh environments. The stainless steel railings are much more expensive than mild steel options.

Wrought Iron

While technically a low carbon iron alloy, wrought iron is often categorized alongside steel due to its similar applications. It’s known for its decorative appeal and historical significance is used in ornamental railings with intricate designs. Wrought iron is strong and durable but it can also rust if it’s not properly maintained. Wrought iron railings are made of mild steel that has not been shaped and finished to resemble traditional wrought iron.

Galvanized Steel

Galvanized steel is mild steel that has been coated with a layer of zinc to protect it from corrosion. The galvanizing process involves dipping the steel in molten zinc which generates a metallurgical bond that offers long lasting protection. Galvanized steel railing is an excellent alternative for outdoor applications where corrosion resistance is important. They are majorly used in industrial settings, commercial buildings and residential properties.

Alloy Steel

Alloy steels are steels that have been alloyed with elements like nickel, chromium, molybdenum or vanadium. The alloying elements can enhance strength, hardness, toughness and corrosion resistance.
